The world's biggest steel producer is moving its U.S. headquarters to Chicago's Loop, Mayor Richard Daley announced today.

Mittal Steel Co. NV, based in the Netherlands, plans to move 212 management workers into the 18th and 19th floors at 1 S. Dearborn St., a new 40-story office tower due to be completed in December.

The employees had been based in Ohio and other cities in the Midwest.

The city will give the building's developer $2 million to help pay for furniture and other equipment for the new offices.

The Tribune reported in July that Mittal had narrowed its search to three buildings downtown. The leading choice at that time was 1 S. Dearborn, being built by the Chicago office of developer Hines Interests LP. The 820,000-square-foot tower is anchored by law firm Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP.

Indiana officials had lobbied Mittal to place its U.S. headquarters in northwest Indiana because it employs about 10,000 people at mills in East Chicago and Burns Harbor.

That comes to just under $10,000 per new steel executive.

Since Daley and the city officals are so proud of what they've arranged, why don't the Mayor, his henchmen, and all the alderman each sponsor one of the incoming employees and put up the cash out of their own pockets?

I suspect Hines Interests LP will turn out to have links to Daley, big contributor or, provides big fees to his relatives, etc.
